Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God”
Hebrews 11:3, “The worlds were framed by the word of God”
Mission worker Sam Hadley said, “The night I was converted, I went out and looked up at the stars and thanked God for their beauty. I had not seen them for 10 years, because a drunkard never looks up. Please take notice that Sam Hadley looked up, saw the stars, and thanked God. He didn’t thank the stars, but a personal Creator and Sustainer who dwells beyond the stars. The writer of Psalm 19 had the same perspective. He affirmed that the heavens sing a perpetual anthem to the Lord, their Maker (Psalm 19:1-5). God is much more than the sum total of all that exists. He is infinite, eternal, and distinct from His creation. He is “the God above.” Many people who talk about God really have no idea who He is. They make vague statements about finding God in the universe or deep within themselves. However, they don’t understand He is a personal Being who is far beyond us in His moral perfection and attributes. Nor do they realize that this infinite God has revealed Himself in Jesus Christ, who has provided for our salvation by dying on the cross for our sins and then rising from the grave.
Psalm 139:14 says, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Do you believe that God fearfully and wonderfully made you; or do you believe you evolved, as the evolutionist would have us believe? Sam Hadley praised the Creator! We should praise Him as well for His marvelous creation because it was God who:
(1) Reminds the sun to rise at its appointed time every morning;
(2) Keeps the earth steadily rotating at tremendous speed;
(3) Feeds the sparrow and dresses the lilies in their splendor;
(4) Guides the feathered flocks southward in the autumn, and
(5) Brings them north again in the spring.
Seeing and hearing a violent storm is an awesome experience that should naturally turn one’s thoughts to God. He makes Himself known through nature, because I’ve heard His “voice” many times … in the stillness of the woods after a heavy snowfall, in a gentle breeze, or in the singing of birds on a spring morning. His marvelous creation, His power and His majesty are inescapable if we would only just take the time to pause, to listen, and to look upward.
Scripture tells us over and over again that God is the first cause behind all that is, “You have made … the earth and everything on it” (Nehemiah 9:6). “You laid the foundation of the earth” (Psalm 102:25). He is “the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them” (Acts 14:15). Just 10 words … “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). My friend, don’t forget them, because they are the foundation of all the beauty and majesty of the universe. Sam Hadley had it right. He believed on Jesus Christ and was changed. Then he looked up at the stars and gave thanks to God. You can also know the God above by trusting His Son, Jesus Christ.
The treasures of the crystal snows
And all the wonders nature shows
Speak of a mighty Maker’s hand
That all in love and wisdom planned … Bosch
(1) Do you know Jesus Christ as Savior? If not, I would urge you to accept Him today!
(2) He will change you … as He did Sam Hadley, and as He changed me!
