John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”

I wanted to share with you today a hymn entitled “Face to Face” written by Carrie E. Breck in 1898 and composed by Grant Colfax Tullar. Carrie was born on January 22, 1855, in Walden, Vermont. Her family moved from Vermont to Vine¬land, New Jersey, and spent most of her life in southern New Jersey. She married Frank Breck, and then moved to Oregon between 1910 and 1920. As a devout Christian, she was devoted to her husband and five daughters. She had no sense of pitch, and couldn’t carry a tune, but she had the gift of poetic rhythm, and wrote more than 2,000 poems. She was not particularly robust in health, and had to take frequent rests while doing chores. At such times, she would sit in her favorite rocking chair, take up a notebook, and write poetry, often with a baby on her knee, or playing at her feet. She died on March 27, 1934 and is buried at the Rose City Cemetery, Portland, Oregon. For those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, what a glorious day it will be when we see Him “Face to Face”. I trust you will enjoy this beautiful hymn.

Face to face with Christ, my Savior,
Face to face—what will it be?
When with rapture I behold Him,
Jesus Christ who died for me.

Chorus

Face to face I shall behold Him,
Far beyond the starry sky;
Face to face in all His glory,
I shall see Him by and by!

Only faintly now, I see Him,
With the darkling veil between,
But a blessed day is coming,
When His glory shall be seen.

Chorus

Face to face I shall behold Him,
Far beyond the starry sky;
Face to face in all His glory,
I shall see Him by and by!

What rejoicing in His presence,
When are banished grief and pain;
When the crooked ways are straightened,
And the dark things shall be plain.

Chorus

Face to face I shall behold Him,
Far beyond the starry sky;
Face to face in all His glory,
I shall see Him by and by!

Face to face! O blissful moment!
Face to face—to see and know;
Face to face with my Redeemer,
Jesus Christ who loves me so.

Chorus

Face to face I shall behold Him,
Far beyond the starry sky;
Face to face in all His glory,
I shall see Him by and by!

Closing thoughts:

The Scriptures succinctly tell us that God has highly exalted Him (Jesus) and given him a name which is above every name and that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow … (Philippians 2:9-10). In the marketplace of ideas, all vendors have an equal right to sell what they believe. However, that doesn’t mean all their ideas are equally right. Believers in Christ proclaim that Jesus is the only way to God not because they are bigots but because they believe it is true. They take at face value His claim that He alone is the true and living way to God. Today many people shrug off the claims of Jesus as the only Savior of the world by saying, “Well, that’s all fine and good, but you have your way to God and I have mine.” Jesus stood such thinking on its head when He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). So my friend, if Jesus’ claims are true, they are true for everyone. If they are false, the sooner we are proved wrong and put on the right road the better. As C. S. Lewis put it, “Christianity is a statement which, if false, is of no importance, and, if true, is of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important.”There are no two ways about it. Jesus Christ doesn’t ask for our vote as the most appealing candidate for Savior of the world. He simply states His lordship of the universe and demands our allegiance. In Matthew 16, Jesus rebuked the religious leaders because they knew how to predict the weather (vv. 2-3), but they failed to recognize the obvious signs that Jesus was the promised Messiah. Later in the same chapter He warned His hearers about the judgment to come (vv. 24-28). He said it is foolish to grab the things of this present world and yet lose one’s own soul for eternity (v. 26). The question remains:

(1) Have you trusted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior?
(2) Have you turned to Him for refuge from the coming storm?

(3) If not drop everything of this world because Christ is the only door into heaven and He may come at any time, so we must be ready at all times.
