Luke 5:16, “He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed”
When we ask God for something that we know is in His will, we must also be ready to receive the answer. The story has been told that when Hudson Taylor went to China, he made the voyage on a sailing ship. As it neared the channel between the southern Malay Peninsula and the island of Sumatra, the missionary heard an urgent knock on his stateroom door. He opened it, and there stood the captain of the ship. “Mr. Taylor,” he said, “we have no wind. We are drifting toward an island where the people are heathen, and I fear they are cannibals.” “What can I do?” asked Taylor.
“I understand that you believe in God. I want you to pray for wind.” “All right, Captain, I will, but you must set the sail.” “Why, that’s ridiculous! There’s not even the slightest breeze. Besides, the sailors will think I’m crazy.” Nevertheless, the captain finally agreed. Forty-five minutes later he returned and found the missionary still on his knees. “You can stop praying now,” said the captain. “We’ve got more wind than we know what to do with!” My brethren, Hudson Taylor believed that God answers prayer. What about you?
Communication is vital to any relationship, be it parent and child, husband and wife, employer and employee, coach and athlete. But more importantly to God and those who love Him. Many people think of prayer only in terms of asking and receiving. However, it’s much more than results. It’s about relationship. One of the most powerful reasons to pray is to maintain a strong and vital relationship with God. Thus, prayer is conversation with Someone we love and with whom we want to stay close to.
At any time and in any place we can lift our voices to the Lord with full assurance that He will hear us. And He does more than just receive our requests. He comprehends, He understands, and He perceives exactly what His precious children ask for in faith. Has God heard from you today? He invites you to make your requests know to Him. What a tragedy that so many of His children go through the day without uttering a single prayer to the One who takes pleasure in hearing their voices! Proverbs 15:8 says, “The prayer of the upright is His delight.” So pray and God will listen!
You will never get a busy signal on the prayer line to Heaven.
