A story has been told about a minister who was preaching on Revelation 22:17. It was a hot summer day and some individuals had trouble paying attention. The heat was bothering the pastor also, so from time to time he would take a drink of water and after each sip he would say, “Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.” In the sanctuary was a little boy and each time the preacher lifted the sparkling glass of water to his lips, the boy’s thirst increased. Finally he decided that if the pastor said once more, “Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely,” he would go to the front and take a drink for himself.
Just then the inviting words rang out once more. Resolutely the little fellow left his seat and walked up to the pulpit. The congregation watched in astonishment as the youngster picked up the glass and took a deep swallow. Then with a kind “Thank you, pastor!” he returned to his seat. The preacher was moved and used the incident to make a spiritual point. He said that we must accept God’s invitation and drink of the Living Water by faith if we are to be saved.
My beloved, when we acknowledge our thirst for God, ask forgiveness for our sins, and accept the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross, we will find spiritual food that satisfies and our soul will live forever! He’s calling, “Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live” (Isaiah 55:3). My brethren many stay spiritually thirsty because they don’t heed the Lord’s clear and simple invitation. Today trust Jesus Christ as your Savior and drink from the Living Water!
I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
And now I live in Him. – Bonar
Only Jesus, the Living Water, satisfies the thirsty soul!
