Isaiah 25:1, “O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth”
My beloved, faithfulness is not only one of the attributes of God, but one that is highly extolled in Scripture. Many times in the Psalms we find the faithfulness of God highlighted as a source of encouragement, hope and comfort. Psalm 33:4 tells us, “For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does” (Psalm 25:10; 30:9; 36:5). Because of God’s faithfulness we can always count on Him even though the picture is as bleak as the Arctic and the circumstances equally impossible. Even though Jerusalem faced desolation because of their sin, the prophet Jeremiah could say of the Lord, “Great is Your faithfulness” Lamentations 3:23. Both the devastation that had occurred and the glories of the future depended on the fact of God’s faithfulness to His promises; those promises of discipline as recorded in Deuteronomy 28 and of Israel’s restoration and future glory as promised throughout the Old Testament.
It was a very stormy night when Hudson Taylor, the famous missionary was scheduled to speak at a meeting at the Seven Street schoolroom in Birmingham, England. His hostess assured him that no one would be attending because it was such a stormy night; however, Taylor insisted on going. He said, “I must go even if there is no one but the doorkeeper.” As it turned out, less than a dozen individuals showed up that night; however, the meeting was marked with unusual spiritual power.
Half of those that came either became missionaries or gave their children as missionaries and the remaining were faithful supporters of the China Inland Mission for years to come. Hudson Taylor was committed to serving his Savior Jesus Christ regardless of the names (those who showed up); the numbers (how many who showed up); or the nature of the situation (whether it was stormy or not). My beloved, because of Hudson Taylor’s determination and commitment, God honored his faithfulness, as He will honor your faithfulness today.
My brethren, faithfulness is an important subject of the Bible, God’s Eternal Word, and is woven throughout the Old and New Testament. Thus, the recurrence of this “precious word” speaks loudly for the importance and need of this spiritual quality both to the people of God, who depend on His faithfulness, and in the people of God, as His people, who are to faithfully model God’s character to a world that is too often anything but faithful (1 Peter 1:14-16). My beloved, no matter what our need may be, we can always count on the faithfulness of God, our Creator.
Great is thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided –
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! – Chisholm
He who abandons himself to God will never be abandoned by God.
